One of my fondest memories as a young girl was watching Disney movies with my mom.

One of my fondest memories as a young girl was watching Disney movies with my mom. Whether it was Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Brandy and Whitney Houston’s version of Cinderella or Disney’s original The Little Mermaid, nine times out of 10 you could catch me reciting the words scene by scene and belting out each song as I twirled around the living room (much to my mother’s amusement).
The latter film was undoubtedly one of my favorites, and now, thanks to the new iteration featuring Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jonah Hauer-King and the star of it all, an electric and compelling Halle Bailey, my inner child got the chance to come alive again nearly 25 years later.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the LA premiere of the film, which took place inside the Dolby Theatre (yes, the home of the Oscars Dolby Theatre). And while the film is definitely geared towards children (and that point shouldn’t be forgotten), the beautiful imagery, bright colors (rendered by Dolby Vision,) new and familiar characters, Bailey’s emotional acting and ethereal singing (heard crisply, thanks to Dolby Atmos) was enough to keep the adult me engaged and enthused for the nearly two and a half hour film.
It can go without saying at this point but Halle Bailey as Ariel is the most perfect casting for a live-action remake Disney has ever done. The way she was able to capture Ariel’s child-like inquisitiveness, stubbornness and yearning is something that should be studied for all other future films. When the latter characteristic was put on full display during her performance of the iconic song, “Part of Your World,” it not only caused the crowd to erupt in applause, but it also caused a few thug tears to escape from my eyes. The urge to cry welled up again during the “Kiss the Girl” scene and at the end when Ariel and Price Eric (played by a very cute and convincing Jonah Hauer-King) sailed off into the sunset. And I still haven’t put my finger on why that was.
Maybe it’s because I was actually allowing myself to escape the realities of adulthood and enjoy the wonders of nostalgia and escapism—if only for a little while. Or maybe it was because watching a Black Ariel swimming around underwater somehow felt like I was seeing and reconnecting with little me, as she twirled around again somewhere on the inside of me and it tugged at my heartstrings.
Whatever it was, the feeling was enough to make me want to experience the—dare I say it—magic of the movie over and over again.

CAROLYN JONES May 12, 2023 After years of fierce debate, mandatory dyslexia screening is significantly closer to reality for California schools. Gov. Gavin Newsom, in his budget revision released Friday, set aside $1 million for teacher training and a requirement that schools screen all children in kindergarten through second grade for risks of dyslexia and other reading disorders, beginning in 2025-26. The budget is subject to final approval by the Legislature by mid-June, but Newsom seemed confident that dyslexia screening would survive last-minute political wrangling. “I’m not worried about this stalling. We’re going to get it done this time,” Newsom said Friday, noting that he himself struggles with dyslexia and is “deeply engaged in the subject.” California is one of only 10 states nationwide that does not screen students for dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects up to 1 in 5 students. Even though 60% of California’s third-graders are not reading at grade level, the teachers union and English learner advocates had vehemently opposed mandatory screening, saying that students whose native language isn’t English could be wrongly identified as having dyslexia and unnecessarily placed in special education. Newsom addressed those fears on Friday. He said that the screening tool being developed at UC San Francisco will be available in numerous languages and take into account students’ cultural and linguistic differences. The UCSF tool, he said, would be state-of-the-art. “I’m excited about what California will export to other states,” he said. “It’s not just about being one of the other states, it’s about being the best among other states.” The budget calls for a panel to meet next year to review several tests, including the UCSF test, and offer schools a choice. Schools would have time to train teachers to administer the test, which would flag students who are at risk of having dyslexia. State Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-Burbank, who has pushed for mandatory screening for years, said he was “ecstatic” at Newsom’s decision to prioritize dyslexia screening in the budget. Portantino, who also has dyslexia, in February introduced SB 691, which would have screened students beginning in 2024-25, a year earlier than Newsom’s proposal. That bill will now not be necessary, he said. “I am extremely happy. This is a great day for kids in California,” Portantino said Friday. “The governor had it right. He and I both understand the urgency of this issue. And I think we’ve ironed out the safeguards to ensure that the (test) will be linguistically and culturally sensitive.” Dyslexia advocates cheered Newsom’s decision. “We have been fighting for this for so long. We’re really excited to see this move forward,” said Megan Potente, co-state director of Decoding Dyslexia California. “There’s a lot of momentum.” Students with dyslexia need extra help learning to match letters to sounds. The sooner they get that help, the sooner they can catch up to their peers, research shows. And the longer schools wait, the harder it is for students to overcome and the more expensive interventions become. Megan Bacigalupi, an Oakland parent and founder of California Parent Power, said that mandatory dyslexia screening is long overdue. “Sitting here as a parent of a dyslexic child who was not screened early and will likely struggle in school for much of his life because of that, today means a great deal to me and all the families that will benefit,” she said. The California Teachers Association, which for years has opposed mandatory screening, appeared to soften its stance on Friday. The longer timeline for implementation and extra money to train teachers made the difference, union President E. Toby Boyd said Friday. “We appreciate the governor hearing the concerns educators have expressed for the last few years and for including funding to properly address early literacy screening, including dyslexia, in a manner that provides a realistic implementation timeline, professional development for educators and thoughtful policy that benefits students,” Boyd said. English learner advocates also appeared ready to move forward with the screening requirement, at least for now. “We appreciate the more comprehensive view on screening with a focus on reading difficulties, not just at risk of dyslexia, but look forward to reviewing the trailer bill language for details, especially how it affects our English learners,” said Martha Hernandez, executive director of Californians Together, which advocates for English learners in California schools.

When Pastor Dale Synder was faced with the people that stole the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church’s land, he called on Color Of Change members to make Bethel AME whole. And together, we won! The city of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team returned the land to the church. Bethel AME is the oldest Black church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but it was more than just a house of worship. It was the site of Pittsburgh’s first Black elementary school and a stop on the Underground Railroad. It was a haven for residents and the center for organizing in the 1950s during the Civil Rights Movement. However, in 1957, the City of Pittsburgh used eminent domain to seize the Bethel AME church's original Hill District site in order to build Civic Arena and a highway system dividing the neighborhood from downtown Pittsburgh. As a result of having its land stolen and being forced to move into a smaller building, the church lost two-thirds of its congregation and subsequent funding for the programs serving Pittsburgh's Black residents.

Photo:John Swope(Getty Images) Harry Belafonte in his film debut as Mr. Williams, School Principal, in ‘Bright Road’. The Root is sad to report that actor, EGOT winner and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte has died at age 96. On Tuesday, a rep for Belafonte confirmed that the legendary singera pssed away due to congestive heart failure at his New York home. Born in 1927's Harlem, and raised in Jamaica for a portion of his life, Belafonte would evolve into an influential figure within both the arts and civil rights space in America. He broke barriers as one of the first Black leading men in Hollywood in the 1950s-1960s, often going up for roles alongside his acting contemporary and fellow barrier-breaker Sidney Poitier. Belafonte went on to star in films such as The Award Story, Island in the Sun, Odds Against Tomorrow, and perhaps most notably, Carmen Jones (co-starring Dorothy Dandridge), which received critical acclaim. Belafonte also garnered acclaim on the musical front, where he became instrumental in bringing the music of Africa and Calypso music to the forefront of American media. For his efforts, he earned the first gold record in history after selling over 1 million LP’s for his 1956 album “Calypso,” which remained on the Billboard Top Pop Album charts for 31 weeks. In 1985, he alongside his manager along with manager Ken Kragen, directed the USA for Africa project which spawned the popular single, “We Are the World.” As prominent as he was in the entertainment space, he was just as significant when it came to the fight for civil rights for African-Americans. A close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and financial backer of many important social movements, Belafonte was a key organizer for the historic 1963 March on Washington, which was supported and attended by fellow giants in the arts and humanitarian spaces such as his eventual best friend Poitier, James Baldwin, Diahann Carrol, Sammy Davis Jr., Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman and many others. James Ellis is an American swim coach who founded the PDR swim team in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He coached the team from 1971 to 2010. Ellis has been inducted to the International Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and received the President's Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Ellis grew up in Pittsburgh, and in the mid-1960s went east to Cheyney State, where he swam competitively in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle. He started as a long-term sub at Bartram High in 1971. While a student at Cheyney, Ellis started as a water safety instructor with the Rec Department, "racing kids every now and then" at the pool, at what is now Sayre-Morris Recreation Center in West Philadelphia. He'd work with the kids who didn't get picked for basketball. After the kids learned to swim, he wanted to keep them in the pool. He saw competitive swimming as a mental and physical outlet, a way to develop discipline - so he created a swim team. In 1972 he fielded his first team. In 1974, competitive swimming was not even a dream to the neighborhood teenagers who gathered to shoot hoops outside the Marcus Foster Recreation Center. In fact, city officials were ready to shutter the run-down rec center near downtown Philadelphia: But then, in walks Jim Ellis. Originally hired to help close the center, he changes his direction - and the neighborhood's - when he discovers a dilapidated swimming pool in the building. After weeks of scrubbing and cleaning up, he invites the local kids in to cool off on a hot summer's day; but he also shows them the power he learned as a champion swimmer in college. Reluctant at first, the teens literally dive in and before long, under his guidance they form a team to compete in local swim meets.
